Fog sealing: Extend the life of your chip seal.
Fog sealing is a hot applied emulsion seal, typically sprayed onto a new or a couple year old chip sealed surface. The fog seal helps bind the chip seal aggregate from the surface and minimize the amount of loss aggregate. Fog sealing can also be applied to newer asphalt surfaces to add binder to the wear course and reduce the impact of oxidization of the surface. Fog seals are one of the lower cost asphalt maintenance options available.
The fog seal process
- Cleaning: All surfaces are thoroughly swept and cleaned forcomplete adhesion.
- Application: The hot oil emulsion is sprayed onto the surface using computerized rate of control technology. Caution tape or traffic flaggers will be present during the curing process.
- Cleanup: After the surface has properly cured and set, caution tape or traffic signs will be removed, and traffic can resume travel across the fog sealed surface.
Depending on temperatures, humidity, wind speed and sun exposure, fog seals can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 3 hours to fully cure out. Generally, one hour is the worst-case scenario except in heavily shaded areas on a humid day.
