7 Reasons Minneapolis Residents Plan Driveway Sealcoating in February (And You Should Too)
February in Minneapolis brings cold mornings and snow-covered driveways, but it also reveals the hidden toll of winter.
As you clear the snow, the cracks in your driveway become impossible to ignore.
Months of heavy snow, de-icing salts, and relentless freeze-thaw cycles have taken their toll, leaving your driveway worn and weathered.
It’s not a very unique experience—many homeowners face the same challenge this time of year. The good news? February is an ideal time to protect your driveway with sealcoating.
Why February, you ask?
In this guide, you’ll learn why so many Minneapolis residents choose February for sealcoating. We’ll show you how acting now can save you time, stress, and money down the road.
Let’s dive in!
Key Takeaways
- Sealcoating in February protects driveways from Minneapolis’s harsh winters by blocking moisture and resisting freeze-thaw damage.
- Scheduling sealcoating in winter avoids the spring contractor rush, saving time and securing competitive off-season rates.
- Adding a protective seal extends your driveway’s lifespan, preventing small cracks from becoming costly repairs.
- February sealcoating preps driveways for spring by preventing water seepage and minimizing damage from thawing snow and rain.
- A freshly sealed driveway boosts curb appeal, ensuring your home looks polished and inviting as winter fades.
7 Key Benefits of Sealcoating Your Minneapolis Driveway in February
Minneapolis winters can be brutal on driveways, but February is the perfect time to take action. If you live in areas like Linden Hills or Northeast Minneapolis, where snowmelt and freezing cycles take a toll, planning ahead can make all the difference.
Here’s why sealcoating in February is a smart move for your driveway—and your wallet.
1. Protects Your Driveway from Minneapolis’s Harsh Winters
If you asked locals, they’d tell you—Minneapolis winters are no joke.
The relentless freeze-thaw cycles can wreak havoc on your driveway. Melting snow seeps into small cracks during the day, and as temperatures drop overnight, the water freezes and expands, widening those cracks.
Over time, this process can leave your driveway in shambles.
If you live near areas like Lake Nokomis, where snow tends to melt and pool, the damage can be even worse.
Sealcoating helps stop this cycle in its tracks.
By applying a protective layer over your driveway, you block moisture from seeping into the surface. This barrier also shields your driveway from de-icing salts, which can corrode concrete and asphalt over time.
Think of sealcoating as your driveway’s winter armor.
It strengthens the surface, blocks out damaging elements, and keeps your driveway in great condition, no matter how many snowstorms Mother Nature throws at us.
2. Avoids the Spring Rush and Contractor Shortages
If you’ve ever tried booking a contractor in spring, you know how hectic it can get.
The snow melts, the demand for repairs skyrockets, and suddenly everyone in neighborhoods like Linden Hills is vying for a spot on the same contractor’s calendar.
The result? Long wait times and higher prices.
That’s why February is such a smart time to act.
Contractors typically have more availability during winter, so you can schedule your sealcoating at a time that works for you. Plus, prices are often more competitive during the off-season, helping you save money.
By getting ahead of the spring rush, you not only save time and money but also lock in a time slot that works before the calendar fills up.
Why wait for the stress of spring when you can handle it now with ease?
3. Extends the Lifespan of Your Driveway
Your driveway is an investment, and like any investment, it requires maintenance to stay in good shape. This is especially true for Minneapolis homeowners near areas like Lake of the Isles, where snowmelt and moisture exposure are constant threats.
Sealcoating is one of the simplest ways to extend the lifespan of your driveway.
By filling in small surface cracks and adding a layer of protection, it reinforces your driveway and prevents minor damage from snow and ice from turning into major problems.
Not sure if your driveway needs sealcoating?
Take a closer look.
If you notice fading, surface cracks, or areas where water collects after a thaw, it’s time to act. Sealcoating in February addresses these issues early, allowing your driveway to remain durable and smooth for years to come.
4. Saves Money by Preventing Expensive Repairs
Think of sealcoating as a small investment that saves you from major expenses later.
The cost of sealcoating is minimal compared to repairs like resurfacing or replacing a driveway—issues that are all too common in older homes throughout Northeast Minneapolis.
When cracks are left untreated, water seeps in, freezes, and expands, causing significant damage that can lead to costly fixes.
By sealcoating in February, you stop this damage at its source, sparing yourself the headache of large repair bills.
If you ask around, Minneapolis homeowners might tell you how they skipped sealcoating for years, only to end up with a driveway full of cracks that required an expensive resurfacing. Learn from testimonials like this.
Sealcoating now is an affordable way to protect your driveway and your wallet.
5. Prepares Your Driveway for Spring Thaw and Rains
Minneapolis winters are tough, but spring isn’t any easier on your driveway.
As snow melts and spring rains roll in, water can seep into unsealed surfaces, leading to damage during the freeze-thaw cycles of early spring.
This is especially problematic in low-lying areas like Minnehaha Creek, where water tends to collect.
Sealcoating in February adds a protective layer just in time for the seasonal transition. It blocks water from penetrating the surface, keeping cracks from expanding as temperatures fluctuate.
Acting now leaves your driveway in excellent condition to withstand the spring thaw and rains without issue.
It’s a proactive step that keeps your driveway functional and attractive through every season.
6. Makes Use of February Discounts
Did you know February is one of the most cost-effective times to sealcoat your driveway?
Many contractors offer winter discounts to keep their teams busy during the slower season. If you live near areas like Dinkytown, this is the perfect opportunity to save money on driveway maintenance.
By acting now, you can lock in a competitive rate and stretch your maintenance budget further.
It’s a win-win: you get high-quality results and significant savings compared to the higher rates you’ll see during peak seasons.
Don’t miss the chance to take advantage of these seasonal deals.
Call your local contractors today and ask about their winter specials.
7. Enhances Your Home’s Curb Appeal Before Spring
As the first warm day of spring arrives and the snow finally melts away, your home feels ready to welcome the new season.
But then you notice your driveway—cracked, worn, and faded from the harsh winter.
It’s not the impression you want to leave, is it?
Sealcoating in February transforms your driveway into a polished, professional-looking surface that’s ready to shine when the snow melts.
In neighborhoods like Kenwood, where curb appeal matters, a sleek driveway makes a powerful statement.
Not only does a sealed driveway make a great first impression, but it also adds value to your home.
Whether you’re hosting a spring gathering or simply taking pride in your property, sealcoating gives your driveway the fresh, professional look it deserves.

7 Essential Winter Tips for Parking Lot Crack Sealing in Minneapolis, MN (Avoid Costly Damage!)
When winter sweeps through Minneapolis, it transforms the city into a snow-covered wonderland, perfect for skiing at Theodore Wirth Regional Park or enjoying hot cocoa after a day outdoors.
However, this picturesque season also brings brutal conditions that can wreak havoc on parking lots. Freezing temperatures, relentless snowfalls, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles cause small cracks to grow into costly potholes, jeopardizing safety and increasing repair expenses.
Timely crack sealing is crucial to protect your pavement from winter’s harshest effects.
This blog dives into seven practical tips to help you safeguard your parking lot before Minneapolis winters take their toll.
Ready to protect your pavement and save on repair costs? Let’s dive in!
Key Takeaways
- Minneapolis winters cause cracks to expand due to freeze-thaw cycles, leading to costly damage if ignored.
- The best times to seal cracks are late fall, early winter, or during brief mid-winter warm spells.
- Clearing debris, moisture, and salt ensures crack sealants adhere properly for lasting winter protection.
- Cold-weather rubberized sealants withstand freezing temperatures and de-icing chemicals common in Minneapolis.
- Regular crack sealing saves money, improves safety, and keeps parking lots functional through harsh winters.
Don’t Let Winter Ruin Your Parking Lot: 7 Expert Crack Sealing Tips for Minneapolis, MN
Minneapolis winters don’t just test your patience—they test your parking lot, too.
Below, we explore expert tips for preventing winter damage, saving money, and keeping your pavement in top condition all season.
Winter Tip 1: Understand How Minneapolis Winters Wreak Havoc on Parking Lots
Minneapolis winters bring dramatic temperature swings, often cycling between freezing and thawing dozens of times each year.
According to local climate data, the city averages over 30 freeze-thaw cycles annually, which spells trouble for asphalt. Water seeps into small cracks, freezes, and expands, causing fissures to widen and deteriorate further.
Heavy snowfall compounds the problem.
Plows scraping lots near Nicollet Mall add wear and tear, while snowmelt saturates cracks, creating ideal conditions for damage.
Neglected cracks can quickly turn into potholes, creating safety risks for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Understand how winters impact your pavement to prepare you to take preventive action, minimizing long-term damage and repair costs.
Winter Tip 2: Identify the Best Times to Schedule Winter Crack Sealing
Timing matters for crack sealing in Minneapolis winters.
Late fall or early winter works best for scheduling repairs before extreme conditions fully set in. However, mid-winter sealing remains an option when temperatures rise above freezing, offering a brief window to tackle repairs.
Cold-weather sealants, designed for subzero temperatures, provide flexibility during those rare warm days.
For instance, lots near the University of Minnesota, bustling with traffic, benefit from proactive scheduling during a January thaw.
Keep a close eye on weather forecasts to align repairs with favorable conditions. Planning ahead allows for effective crack sealing, protecting your lot before damage worsens.
Winter Tip 3: Prepare Minneapolis Parking Lots for Effective Crack Sealing
Preparation sets the stage for effective crack sealing.
Begin by clearing debris, snow, and ice from cracks. Busy urban lots near Target Field, for example, demand meticulous cleanup to make sure sealing materials adhere properly.
Surfaces must stay dry for optimal results.
Use portable blowers or heated tools to remove moisture, and take care to eliminate salt or de-icing residue, which weakens adhesion.
Snow removal equipment matters, too—opt for tools designed to minimize surface damage.
With thorough preparation, your parking lot stays ready for asphalt repairs that last through the harshest winter.
Winter Tip 4: Select Winter-Ready Crack Sealing Materials for Minneapolis Conditions
Not all sealants handle Minneapolis winters equally well.
Rubberized or cold-applied materials perform best in freezing temperatures, offering elasticity that accommodates frequent freeze-thaw cycles.
De-icing agents, commonly used in areas like Uptown, can degrade inferior materials, so choose sealants resistant to chemical exposure.
Consult a good local contractor that provides select high-quality options meeting industry standards for cold-weather use.
Proper material selection prevents cracks from worsening, extending the lifespan of your parking lot.
Winter Tip 5: Overcome Minneapolis-Specific Challenges in Parking Lot Maintenance
Minneapolis poses unique challenges for parking lot maintenance.
Frequent snow removal, especially with heavy equipment, exacerbates existing cracks. High-traffic areas like Midtown Global Market see accelerated wear, while salt and de-icing chemicals create additional strain.
Prevent water pooling in low-lying spots, such as sloped lots near the Mississippi River, by addressing drainage issues promptly. Routine inspections and timely repairs keep small cracks from becoming major problems.
Tailoring maintenance strategies to these local challenges keeps your parking lot safe and functional throughout the winter.
Winter Tip 6: Avoid Costly Mistakes in Winter Crack Sealing
Many mistakes jeopardize the success of winter crack sealing.
Improper materials, like those prone to cracking in extreme cold, waste time and money. Sealing over debris or ice compromises adhesion, while DIY attempts often lack the tools and expertise needed for lasting results.
In high-traffic areas such as parking lots near U.S. Bank Stadium, professional care guarantees repairs hold up under pressure.
Choose contractors experienced with Minnesota winters to avoid costly errors and achieve durable results.
Winter Tip 7: Learn the Benefits of Regular Crack Sealing in Minneapolis
Consistent crack sealing saves money by preventing major repairs or repaving, as seen in well-maintained lots near Mill City Museum. It also improves safety, reducing tripping hazards and minimizing vehicle damage during icy conditions.
Regular maintenance enhances curb appeal and property value, especially in neighborhoods like Northeast Minneapolis.
By planning ahead, business owners minimize downtime while keeping their lots functional and welcoming year-round.

- Detailed, written estimates guarantee cost transparency, outlining materials, labor, and project timelines for a hassle-free experience.

How to Choose the Best Driveway Paving Service in Minneapolis: 5 Tips Every Homeowner Should Know
Finding the right contractor can feel daunting, but these five tips will make the process straightforward and stress-free.
Tip #1 – Choose a Contractor with Minneapolis Expertise
Driveway paving in Minneapolis requires unique skills.
Our extreme winters challenge even the sturdiest driveways, making local knowledge essential. The freeze-thaw cycles alone can wreak havoc on poorly constructed asphalt paving driveways, leading to costly repairs.
Why hire a Minneapolis paving expert?
- They understand local soil conditions and how to prepare for harsh winters.
- Familiarity with city zoning laws and permitting requirements keeps your project hassle-free.
- They’ve worked in neighborhoods like Uptown and Linden Hills, giving them the experience to tailor their work to Minneapolis-specific challenges.
Here’s how to vet contractors:
- Request references from homeowners or businesses in your area.
- Look for visible projects in neighborhoods like Northeast or Edina.
- Check testimonials or reviews on Nextdoor or the Better Business Bureau.
Warning: Skip contractors who struggle to prove local experience or brush off questions about regional challenges. Their lack of knowledge could cost you more in future driveway or parking lot repairs.
Tip #2 – Verify Licenses, Insurance, and Local Credentials
Paving contractors need to play by the rules—without proper licensing and insurance, you could be left footing the bill for accidents or shoddy work.
Here are some key documents to check:
- Licenses: Verify their credentials on the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry website.
- Insurance: Ensure they have liability and workers’ compensation coverage to protect your property and their team.
Minneapolis homeowners, take note:
Driveway paving often requires neighborhood-specific expertise, such as complying with unique residential paving standards in areas like Kenwood or Powderhorn. Contractors with the right licenses know these rules.
Red flag: Avoid anyone hesitant to provide proof of credentials or insurance. It’s a clear sign they may not meet legal or quality standards.
Tip #3 – Get Detailed Written Estimates
A clear, written estimate can save you from unexpected surprises. It’s your roadmap for driveway paving costs in Minneapolis.
What does a good estimate include?
- Itemized material costs for asphalt, concrete paving, or other options.
- Labor charges and project timelines, including start and finish dates.
- Warranty coverage and potential additional fees, like removing old pavement.
Pro-tip for Minneapolis homeowners:
Seasonal challenges, like freeze-thaw cycles, often affect materials and costs. Ask contractors to explain how they’ll address these issues and ensure durability.
Warning: Contractors offering only verbal or vague estimates are risky. Without a detailed agreement, disputes are almost guaranteed.
Tip #4 – Assess Equipment and Sustainability Practices
The right tools and methods make all the difference in driveway paving.
Equipment impacts the quality of the finish, while eco-friendly paving practices can help the environment and your wallet.
Why does it matter?
- Modern machinery ensures smooth surfaces and proper drainage, crucial for avoiding ice buildup in winter.
- Sustainable options, like permeable paving, reduce runoff into Minneapolis lakes like Bde Maka Ska.
Here’s a list of questions to ask your paving company:
- What equipment do you use for driveway design and installation?
- Are eco-friendly paving materials an option?
- Do you source materials locally to support Minneapolis businesses?
Red flag: Contractors who avoid discussing equipment or refuse to explore sustainable options may cut corners.
Tip #5 – Check Warranties and Post-Installation Support
A durable driveway isn’t just about installation—it’s about support long after the work is done. That’s why warranties and follow-ups matter.
What are warranty questions to ask?
- How long does the warranty last?
- Does it cover materials, labor, or both?
- Do you offer spring inspections to assess winter damage?
Minneapolis homeowners, pay attention:
Winter can expose driveway flaws. A contractor who offers post-installation support ensures peace of mind and long-term savings.
Warning: Beware of vague or verbal-only warranties. Always get the terms in writing.
Take the First Step Toward a Durable Driveway
A well-paved driveway is more than just a surface—it’s an investment that boosts your home’s value and stands up to Minneapolis’ toughest winters. By following these tips, you’ll hire the best driveway paving contractors for lasting results.

Having sealcoating done to the parking lot would provide this, and it would also make the parking lot look smoother and nicer. The Allied Blacktop specialists met with the deacons to go over the parking lot and to give them an estimate. The deacons had to present the estimate to the congregation, then the congregation would have to agree to have the sealcoating done, so it was important that the estimate was fairly priced.
Once the deacons had the bid they presented it to the congregation. The congregation decided it would be best to have the parking lot outside the church seal coated, because it would end up saving the church money in the long run. Necessity, the mother of invention this Winter
This winter brought severe cold to many parts of the U.S., and DOTs have had to get plenty creative to keep up with the snowfall. According to Asphalt Magazine, new machines with ice-breaking attachments, innovative “tow plows” and potato juice have all played their part in getting us through this record-breaking season. Yes, potato juice was found by TDOT (Tennessee Department of Transportation) to be a great, biodegradable ice-melter! See more in this interesting article about how creativity went to new heights, even as temps went to new lows.

Happy Holidays!
Asphalt through the ages, a quick history.
One of this country’s earliest paving projects was the paving of Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. This project used asphalt provided by a Trinidad Lake exporter, and reportedly the road lasted 11 years – not bad for pre-petroleum product. In the mid 1870’s refined petroleum asphalt was developed, and another huge advance was the introduction of a laboratory testing method first developed in France. Modern asphalt was tested and perfected in order to accommodate the booming automobile population. By 1910, refined petroleum dominated as the asphalt of choice.
In 1956 the demand for asphalt reached a record level when Dwight Eisenhower’s Federal Aid Highway Act provided for the most extensive highway infrastructure on the planet. The highways were largely built with asphalt, although some state highway departments opted for concrete. The modern highway system was born.
Today, asphalt still resembles these early formulas with the addition of binding agents that prevent rutting, provide more drainage and add durability. The benefits of asphalt are timeless: Rapid drying, good drainage and relative low cost make it the winning choice yesterday and today!

Celebrating the job(s) well done!
Allied celebrated the July 4th of July and a record summer with a hot grill, burgers and plenty of fixings. The party was a thank you to our hard-working team for making this summer possible. Allied hits the pavement with one of our busiest work seasons yet!
Our crews are all over Minnesota this summer. Here are a few snapshots from folks in the field.
Minnesota menace: Secrets of our pothole problem
Road crews dot the highways and streets during the summer. Although they add to frustrations and delays for drivers, they’re providing a crucial service: Saving our cars from shattering potholes! But why is Minnesota so prone to potholes in the first place? Here are a few clues.
- Extreme temperatures. The wide swings from below freezing to above 80 degrees in summer cause water to freeze and shift under pavement.
- Rain! Minnesota is known for snow, but we also get a lot more rain in the Spring than many places, creating soft, bog-like conditions.
- Unstable sub-soils. Minnesota is full of clay and swamp-land soils that erode from under roads and leave them weakened.
- Aging asphalt. Recent budget-tightening means asphalt is not being replaced as frequently.

Chip sealcoating season!
Chip sealcoating is a great option for adding a tough new wear surface that also adds skid resistance. This process can triple the life of your asphalt. The surface combines a durable layer of hot oil with loose rock (chips). It’s all rolled into place for years of reliable use!
The steps
Patching and crack sealing. This should be done at least a week ahead of the chip sealing process to allow for complete curing of the crack seal or patch materials.
- A thorough cleaning of the surface area so that adhesion is flawless
- Application of hot oil and aggregate materials. We use computerized chip spreaders for accuracy.
- Cleanup of excess chips and loose materials. This happens within a few days after we chip sealcoat if it’s a high traffic area. In low traffic areas, we like to wait a few weeks to allow for full curing before cleanup.
We specialize in chip sealcoating with minimum interruption to your business or traffic flow! Get in touch.

Allied for a cancer-free tomorrow
Twenty years ago, the Cancer Shoot began as a way to combine sportsmanship and community with the search for a cancer cure. Allied Blacktop was there 20 years ago, and continues to sponsor the shoot today. On March 13, Allied attended the 20th annual Cancer Shoot, and sponsored three pegs at the event. Dr. Saltzman’s lab has navigated Phase I Human Testing and has moved to Phase II Human Testing with FDA approval. Funds from the Cancer Shoot go toward state-of-the art equipment and hiring the best scientists available for Dr. Saltzman’s ground-breaking research.
The Cancer Shoot is organized in part by Rob Evans, one of the hosts of the award-winning TV show, The Ultimate Hunt. Far from your average reality show, this innovative hit brings together hunters, doctors, and the race for a cure for cancer. Allied is proud to support Rob Evans, Dr. Saltzman and their important efforts.

Potholes – is prevention possible?
Spring is pothole season in any state that has winter weather. When ice melts water gets trapped beneath asphalt and on top of still-frozen ground. This water usually goes through a few cycles of freezing and expanding then melting and contracting, weakening the asphalt and eroding the subsurface. But is there any way to prevent potholes from forming in the first place?
The short answer is: Not entirely. Engineers are working on improved asphalt formulas every day, but in a state with extreme temperatures, asphalt is always going to be vulnerable to some degree. There are a few things you can do to protect your asphalt as much as possible:
- Check your drainage system! In the warmer months look for pooling or any other clues of improper drainage. This gives you an idea as to which areas won’t drain properly underneath the slushy snows of spring.
- Sealcoating provides a protective seal which helps prevent deterioration. It doubles or even triples the life of your asphalt.
- Use the best materials! We use CS-41 resurfacing asphalt emulsion sealers. It exceeds MNDot fog sealing requirements, and will give you longer lasting results. Don’t settle for cheap substitutes!
- Repair potholes and crack seal as needed to maintain the overall structural integrity of your parking lot, path or roadway. Cracks may look minor, but they can become a larger problem quickly. Stay on top of minor flaws for a stronger, longer lasting surface.

Minnesota Pollution Control recognizes Allied Blacktop
At Allied, we’ve been committed to the environment from the start. We’ve voluntarily implemented a number of initiatives like recycling all asphalt and using energy efficiency lighting throughout our headquarters.
As an industry leader, we’ve always banned the use of coal tar because of its carcinogenic content. Now the State of Minnesota has followed suit, implementing a full ban on coal-tar seal coats throughout the state. As part of that effort, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has provided a list of pledged contractors and more info about the ban here. We’re proud to be on the list

The deep freeze: What happens to asphalt in the winter months.
In Minnesota we have the old joke that there are two seasons: Winter and pothole repair. Here’s a look at what happens to asphalt through the seasons.
Summer: Extreme heat (above 100˚) can cause asphalt to expand and buckle in high traffic areas. Temps of 80˚ to 90˚ can also cause minor damage as asphalt becomes more pliable and prone to divots from debris. Water seeps through the divots, add in a little improper drainage and you’ve got moisture staying put, just waiting to freeze
Winter: Water expands up to a whopping 10% when it freezes. When the cold hits, any water that has made its home in your asphalt freezes solid, grows and flexes. This causes small cracks to become big cracks, or heaving and buckling.
Spring: Frozen water thaws out again, leaving the base material underneath asphalt soft. With the weight of vehicles passing over the asphalt, a softened base eventually gives way and viola! Potholes, cracks and heaving
So what can you do for smart protection of your asphalt investment? A little preventative maintenance can go a long way. In the summer months stay on top of crack sealing and consider an additional protective sealcoat or overlay if your asphalt is more than two years old. Regular sweeping also prevents debris from working its way into cracks and divots so they don’t become bigger issues.
Lastly, watch your asphalt during the rainy seasons to see if water is pooling significantly. This could be a sign of an inadequate drainage system or faulty catch basins. In that case, crack sealing and sealcoating will be band-aids at best. Rather that continuously repairing asphalt surfaces, attacking the underlying drainage issue directly is your best bet. Contact us any time for an evaluation.
Happy Holidays, hiring, and prepping for 2013
Planning for 2013
Winter is a great time to celebrate, eat, and forget about asphalt – for a minute! Just remember, when Spring rolls around you’ll probably have a whole host of issues to deal with. Freezing temperatures cause water to expand and cause cracks, potholes and ridges. So enjoy the season, and when you get some down time, here are a few tips for your planning pleasure:
• Assessment: Review all your asphalt surfaces and their age. Have a parking lot that hasn’t been sealed lately? Chances are it will need some attention in the Spring. Know of a road that already has a few cracks, plan on making that a first priority. Contact us if you need help assessing and getting a maintenance schedule together.
• Sweeping: Our sweeping quotes are going out now! Get in touch if you need one.
• Budgeting: The end of the year means it’s time to budget. Contact us for quotes, questions, or help getting your numbers together.
Hooray! Allied is hiring!
We’re getting our new team together for the Spring, and we’re looking for responsible workers who want to have fun and work hard in a growing company. We provide lots of on-the-job training, flexibility and opportunities.

Allied gets ink! Plus, a birds-eye view of Treasure Island
Allied Blacktop company was featured in US Builder’s Review for our 60th anniversary. The article has a nice quote from owner Dan Smith about the heart and soul of Allied, “One of the things that really sets us apart is that we focus on relationships in an industry that’s notorious for ignoring them. We try to really listen to what the customer is saying.” Hey, we didn’t invent listening to our customers, but we definitely work at it! Dan also talked about how Allied has not only stayed in business, but flourished during the economy’s ups and downs. Allied is now the go-to for high profile projects like the University of MN, Mystic Lake Casino and General Mills. One secret is unity. “We work at it until we all agree on the same vision,” Dan said. “We don’t try to achieve warm fuzziness, because that’s fake, but we try to push through being on the same page. Sometimes that means living through the uncomfortableness of very direct communication.” Download a pdf of the article.
In other news we swept up the last bit of debris on our Treasure Island Resort and Casino project. If you’ve never seen how big a parking lot at a casino/resort is, take a look!
Yes, that definitely took a few pounds of asphalt.
Allied did the lot, walkways, some concrete work, auxiliary lots at the Tipsy Turtle Bar (ok, we just really like saying that name), pretty much everything you see here in our choppers-eye-view. We used a Cape Seal process that does a great job of minimizing oil bleeding and rock tracking. In this process you perform a regular chip seal, then sweep up and haul away the excess. A final coat of emulsion (CS41) is applied after that to set everything in place. Find out more about chip sealing.
