There’s nothing more rewarding for us than hearing, “We couldn’t be happier … You guys did a great job!” from a customer.
That’s exactly what Jerry Larson, representing Oster Covenant Church in Waverly, told us after our crew completed the paving and edgework on their parking lot. His words—and the photo he sent—capture exactly the kind of transformation and attention to detail we aim for.
Here’s how our crew at Allied Blacktop Co. turned a routine paving job into a lasting source of pride for the congregation and the community around Waverly, MN.

A Sacred Space With Tough Expectations
Church parking lots are more than asphalt and striping. For congregants arriving by foot or car, the approach to the building is part of the first impression. The transitions, edges, and interface with landscaping all must feel right—both functionally and aesthetically.
When Oster Covenant Church called us, their goals were clear:
- A clean, smooth, durable pavement surface
- Seamless edges where the pavement meets landscape timbers and lawn
- Crisp transitions to the existing road and apron
- A final result that felt dignified and respectful for a place of worship
One wrinkle: the church property has landscape timbers bordering planting beds. If asphalt work isn’t done carefully, sealcoat or tar often splatters onto those timbers, leaving unsightly marks and damaging the wood.
The client explicitly asked: No tar on the timbers.
From Planning to Perfection
1. Careful layout and protection
Before starting, our crew and foreman walked the site with church representatives. We flagged every boundary and sensitive surface. We installed temporary shields and masking along the timbers to prevent spray or drips.
2. Precision cutting and edge control
Where pavement met planting areas, we used a fine-cutting saw and handheld tools to get crisp lines. We made controlled lifts and compaction, ensuring the asphalt settled correctly right up to the timbers without overlap.
3. Meticulous transitions
Approach slabs, apron connections, and tie-ins to the street required careful grading.
Our crew ensured the slope, crown, and blending were smooth—no sudden steps or weak joints. We used hand raking and finishing trowels in critical spots to match the existing slopes.
4. Final cleanup and client walk-through
Once paving was complete, every surface was cleaned of debris.
Our foreman accompanied church leadership on a walk-through. Any minor blemishes or loose material were corrected immediately. The final approval hinge was their “wow” moment—no tar on timbers, tight edges, seamless transitions.
What the Client Said
“Please thank your talented crew for the work they did on our Church parking lot. The outer edge where the pavement went against the landscape timbers was perfect. We didn’t think it was possible, but we couldn’t find any tar on the landscape timbers. The edges that met the lawn were packed and finished off beautifully. The transitions from the lot to the road and to the apron in front of the church were also perfect. We couldn’t be happier with the way this turned out. You guys did a great job!”
